The Hole in Our Gospel: All the Info You Need
What is The Hole In Our Gospel?
The Hole In Our Gospel is a book by Richard Stearns, the president of the relief agency, World Vision. We hope that all members and friends of Tab will read the book together. This experience will challenge us to use our gifts, grow our faith, and reach out to our friends, neighbors and the world. There will also be opportunities for growth for all ages through discussion, mainly as part of Wednesdays @ Tab.
When do we begin?
You can start reading now. If you don’t have your book, pick one up Sunday or contact the church office, 923-5458 or frontdesk@tabpres.org. The book is free, but if you would like to help with the cost, you are welcome to place a check in the offering any Sunday. The reading schedule is printed on a bookmark (available in McKee Hallway), and can also be found here. The kick-off for all Hole In Our Gospel activities is Wednesday, February 22.
What’s going to happen on Ash Wednesday, February 22?
Community Meal at 5:45, Ash Wednesday Service in the Chapel at 6:30 and an introductory session with Pastor Gable at 7:00, also in the Chapel.
What is going to happen on a typical Wednesday night?
Our study and discussion of The Hole In Our Gospel will form the main class of Wednesdays @ Tab this semester. Following our community meal from 5:45 to 6:30 pm, an installment of a companion video series will be shown to everyone. After the video, we will break out into small discussion groups.
How do I sign up for a discussion group?
Sign up in McKee Hallway this Sunday or call the church office to say you’d like to be in a group.
I can’t make it on Wednesdays, is there a small group that meets on Sunday?
Yes. The Beacon 2.0 Class will be discussing the book on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am in the Parlor. No need to sign up for this one, just come on in and join the discussion.
I hear there is going to be a one-day seminar on March 17.
That’s correct and it’s going to be good! Rob Weingartner of the Outreach Foundation will help us unpack the significance of The Hole In Our Gospel, discover what God is doing in the world, and learn how your gifts can be used in sharing the Gospel. The cost will be $10 per person, $25 maximum per family, to help cover the cost of the speaker and lunch.
I’m reading the book now and I’d like to apply what I’m learning. Is there an opportunity to do this soon?
Yes, you will be interested in The Amaizing Lunch, Sunday March 11 at noon in the dining room. This unique lunch of corn, beans, bananas and water will help raise awareness of hunger and education in Kenya. Pastor John Gable, recently returned from that African nation, will be your host. There will be more details later, but we wanted you clear the date for this.
Can I invite my friends to participate in this?
Yes, please do! Journeying through The Hole in Our Gospel is open to all who are interested. The book, the Wednesday discussions, the seminar and the lunch are all good reasons to invite others.
March 6: Wheaton College Women’s Chorale
The Wheaton College Women’s Chorale will be appearing at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:00 pm.
The Chorale has sung for enthusiastic audiences in this country, Europe and the British Isles. Composed of over sixty students, the Chorale’s central goal is to worship God with its musical offerings, to up-lift audiences through shared ministry and to enrich the college experience for ensemble members.
In addition to ministry in churches around the nation and campus appearances, the Women’s Chorale has appeared in recent years at both regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. Join us for this up-lifting concert as we welcome The Wheaton College Women’s Chorale.
A free-will offering will be received to help offset the cost of presenting this concert.
Wednesdays @ Tab Begins February 22
5:45 to 6:30 pm Community Meal
6:30 to 8:00 pm Discipleship Opportunities for All Ages
In conjunction with the All-Church read of The Hole in Our Gospel, Tab is offering small group opportunities on Wednesdays beginning February 22, as well as two classes: The Hole In Our Gospel and the Women’s Bible Study.
The Hole In Our Gospel class will feature a gathering time to watch a short video based on the weekly readings followed by break-out sessions for small groups to go through a Bible Study and discussion on the themes and concept of the book. The small groups will meet for the first six weeks and then we’ll join John Gable and staff the subsequent weeks on what’s next for our church as a result of reading this book together.
The Women’s Bible study will go through a Beth Moore study on the book of Revelation.
Also our Children’s and Youth programming will be available during this time with Jennifer Wirt, Brodie Sears and their team of dedicated workers. We hope you’ll mark your calendars and be a part of something new and unique for our church!
The Hole In Our Gospel: What is God Asking of Us?
During the season of Lent, members and friends of Tab will participate in an all-church read together. It is our prayer that The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns, president of World Vision U.S., will challenge us as we ask questions such as:
What does God expect of us?
Who is our neighbor?
What then should we do?
Where is our treasure?
Small discussion groups will be formed to explore these and other questions. There will also be a weekend retreat at Tab on March 17 and 18. Tab members and friends can pick up a free copy of the book at the church and begin reading now. We hope you can join us for this exciting time of discovery.
Christmas with Tab on TV
Christmas with Tab, featuring the Sanctuary Choir, will air Christmas Eve at 5:00 pm and Christmas Day at 2:00 pm on WHMB-TV 40 (Comcast channel 9, Brighthouse channel 22).
This year is the 33nd annual Christmas telecast, to be recorded on December 18 at 10:00 am in Tab’s beautiful neo-Gothic sanctuary. Special musical guest Ben Crawford will sing,” and the choir will lead the congregation in the singing of familiar carols of the season, as well as present music by Finzi, Riese and more. Rev. L. John Gable will give the message as part of this worship service, celebrating the nativity of Christ.
We hope you can watch on Christmas Eve or join us in person on December 18!

Fall Adult Education Opportunities
Tab will be offering three great classes on Sunday mornings this fall, beginning on September 11.
Beacon 2.0 This multi-generational offering provides open discussion about the gospel and life through fellowship and insightful teaching on topics such as community-building and spiritual formation. This fall we will look at personal spiritual development as a means to identify our God-given gifts for ministry and grow as citizens of God’s expanding Kingdom on earth. Also we’ll be preparing for this year’s CCDA conference by looking at the topic of education as a tool for community transformation. 10:05 am. Parlor.
Choir Class This class was originally established to meet the Bible study needs of the Choir members, but is open to anyone. For major portions of this coming year, this class will also be studying the Straight Through the Bible curriculum. Other topics and teachers will be featured at various times. 9:10 am. Library.
Straight Through the Bible We will build on the foundation of last year’s Journey Together and take a closer, more extensive look at the entire Bible over several years. The complete Bible text will be presented in chronological order – straightening out the overlapping events of Kings and Chronicles, and studying the prophets in their proper context. Similarly, the Gospels will be examined in harmony, and the various Epistles will be featured in their logical places within the events of Acts. An inter-testamental overview will chart the transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament. The class will be led by a variety of Tab teachers, and will meet in the newly-remodeled Library at 10:05 am. There is no registration or class fee, though participants are encouraged to buy their own copy of the Tyndale NIV One Year Chronological Bible and bring a notebook.
